Rider Profile: Owain

Name: Owain Williams
Team: The Buggy Team.

Owain has been kiting for approx 7 years. Over this time he has become a kiting instructor and raced for Scotland at the European champs, but his love for kiting started many years before he bought his first traction kite.
Growing up on the Isle of Tiree Owain spent a lot of time outside either learning to Windsurf or just taking his bicycle out and cycling around the island. One summer however he decided to get his first 2 line stunt kite, it was great fun and he flew it as often as he could.
He then went to university in Edinburgh and became a student, spending his money on drink and carryouts rather than anything else.
During his studies he went on work placement which gave him some extra funds to play with so he bought his first traction kite, a 4m PKD Buster after taking the advice of a local shop in Edinburgh.

A couple of days later Judith and Owain went up to Tentsmuir to fly the kite, there didn't seem to be much wind so they unwound the kite and launched it! There was more wind that they thought and Owain shot forward, quickly digging his heals in to the beach and scudding. A week later Owain went back to the shop and bought the 2m PKD Buster, much easier to control and a nicer experience.

It didn't take long for Owain to want to use the kites with a buggy so once again, the extra money he was making from work experience got spent on a Flexifoil buggy. Every weekend after that Owain and Judith spent as much time as they could up at St Andrews.

Over the years Owain has progressed from just buggying up and down the beach to taking part in competitions for freestyle and racing with his kites and buggy.

For racing Owain borrows Judith's Libre full race buggy and for freestyle he is still using his original Flexfoil buggy which has been modified to allow him to do jumps and other freestyle moves.
