The flying area is the grassland immediately to the south of Trelawney Terrace and extending to the shore.
The attached image of the site has some notes to show access, key features, parking, etc.
This spot has been used by the Irvine Flyers in the past and SPKA have used the stretch of beach to the SW (extending down to Irvine) for race meets up until this year (moved to Sands Of Luce, Stranraer). The site is public land so due consideration and the usual common sense rules should be applied when flying. ie. take note of football matches, dog walkers, picnickers, campers, practice golfers, would-be Barry Sheenes on uninsured motorbikes with no crash helmets, etc.
There is a video of the site on the Ozone site (curiously entitled Troon) which gives an idea of the terrain. Similarly Syri (Kev) has recently posted a video in the video section of the forum which shows the glorious views out to Arran, plus some low-speed buggying in light winds.
In summary, the site is regularly mown grassland, criss-crossed with narrow tarmac access paths (about the width of a buggy and just wide enough for access using a family car). In the centre there's a narrow area of 15-20ft high bushes which has been know to ensnare the odd kite. The central area is mainly flat with a slight N-S rise. The periphery and southerly point are generally banked, have hillocks (think Telly-Tubbies) or have a rolling off-camber down to the access road. This makes for some interesting buggying and great for those who want to launch board/buggies for some hang time. The whole site is generally dry and well-drained although it does take longer for the central area to dry out after the monsoons. There are a handful of sink holes dotted about the place and there's the odd rut at the side of some of the paths, so just scope out your runs before hitting them at full tilt! The only downside is that the site is not on my doorstep ;-)
To the SW there is an area of scrubland with dirt tracks to the SW beach. It is possible to buggy/freeride on this area and (with a favourable wind) it's possible to get within spitting distance of the beach (but beware the wire fences at the edge of the dunes). Most folks drive across the dirt tracks and park close to the beach if they want to kite all the way up to Irvine. Compared to St. Andrews the SW beach is a lot wetter and has small rivers/streams running to the sea (all crossable in a buggy but you will get wet). Wet gear / waterproofs advisable unless you just want to pootle about on a dry part of the beach.
As far as I know traction kiting is restricted on the NE beach which runs south of Stevenston itself.
If anyone has pics feel free to attach or send to me.
Cheers, Steve
